The Ministry of Education, Science and Sport announced that almost 348,000 primary and secondary school students have started the new academic year in Lithuania, the highest number since September 2015. The increase is partly due to Ukrainians who fled the war to Lithuania, according to Dainoras Lukas, the ministry’s spokesperson.

“As of September 9, there were 347,927 students registered in general education schools, including more than 8,000 Ukrainians,” Lukas said. “The [total] number of students is higher than in 2015-2016 when 344,749 were enrolled,” he added.

At the start of this academic year, there are 948 general education schools in Lithuania, nine fewer than a year ago. According to official statistics, almost 65,000 Ukrainians have settled in Lithuania since the start of the war in late February. Around 18,000 of them are of school age.
