LRT.lt announced that the Council of Paris has designated Place du Général Catroux as “Jardin de la Lituanie” (The Garden of Lithuania). It will be the first location named after Lithuania in the French capital, the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry Gabrielius Landsbergis said on June 8.

“From 1925 to 1940, a historic legation of interwar Lithuania was situated in Fournier’s residence opposite the square,” he explained. “Lithuania lost it after the Soviet occupation. This is a historical event because the name of Lithuania finally appears on the map of Paris,”.

The Place du Général Catroux is situated near the Lithuanian Embassy in Paris. The official opening of Jardin de la Lituanie is scheduled for 2024. Various events will also take place in Paris and other French cities next year to coincide with a season of Lithuanian culture.
