At the European Union Film Festival

The virtual European Union Film Festival will take place from November 12th until November 28th everywhere in Canada! You will have a wonderful opportunity to watch 27 European movies in different genres. Each film will be “live” online for a 48-hour period, which gives you plenty of time to watch them. All films are presented in their original languages with English, and, in some cases, French subtitles. After the success of the 2020 virtual EUFF, the Canadian Film Institute (CFI), The Cinematheque in Vancouver, and the European Union Film Festival of Toronto have reunited to organize and host the 2021 virtual edition. As in the past, the festival is also hosted in collaboration with the Delegation of the European Union to Canada and the diplomatic missions of European Union Member States. Together, these partnerships provide a unique opportunity to experience the rich cultures of each European Union Member State across Canada all from the comfort of one’s own home.

On November 23 you can see the online screening of an immersive Lithuanian documentary The Jump (Šuolis) by director Giedrė Žickytė at European Union Film Festival 2021.

The film reaches back to 1970, just off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard, Lithuanian sailor and would-be defector Simas Kudirka jumped off his Soviet vessel aboard a US coast guard cutter, asking for asylum. His leap for freedom set off a chaotic series of events, leading to one of the biggest political muddles during the Cold War. Through eye-witness reports, rare archival footage and a dramatic first-person re-enactment by now 90-year-old would-be defector Simas Kudirka, director Giedrė Žickytė takes us on a stranger-than-fiction journey that became an inspiration for people, pictures and politics, reaching all the way to the White House.
