Vytautas Magnus University (VDU) in Kaunas is offering online classes in Lithuanian language and culture. The online course beinning in January, 2023, includes language classes as well as lectures on Lithuanian history, culture, literature, virtual visits to the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre, and the National Martynas Mažvydas Library. Students also watch Lithuanian films, can learn Lithuanian folk dances, songs.

In the past, many students wanted to study Lithuanian because it was their spouse’s mother tongue, but today a large portion of students are people of Lithuanian descent who are searching for their identity, according to VDU. Students also vary in age.

The four week course, from January 2 to 31, 2023, consists of 120 hours, with about 60 hours of language learning. This is a perfect opportunity for people (age 18+) who are interested in Lithuania and the Lithuanian language, people with Lithuanian roots, people who work or will work in Lithuania, students who have studied or will come to study in Lithuania.

The course comprises language lessons for anyone from complete beginners to advanced learners who want to continue their journey. They will enjoy cultural and social lectures and activities designed to create an immersive experience of Lithuanian culture adapted to the online format. There will be special assignments and interactions with Lithuanians and with new friends from around the world united by the desire to learn Lithuanian.

The organizers have over 20 years of experience conducting Lithuanian Language and Culture courses, with professional teachers and specialists delivering lectures and hosting activities, with dedicated staff members to answer questions before, during and after the courses, as well as mentors to guide students through the process and all the platforms that will be used.

Students will learn the Lithuanian language or improve their existing language skills, gain insight into Lithuanian culture by participating in lectures and cultural activities with first-hand experience in online learning.

By the end of the course students will be able to speak, read and write in the Lithuanian language (at A1, A2, B1, B2, C1 or C2 level); understand the historical, social, and (geo)political situation in Lithuania and learn about Lithuanian cinema, music, art, food and literature. The program includes lectures, group work, individual assignments and activities such as virtual museum visits, online meetings with well-known Lithuanians.
