On the first day of each new year, Lithuania celebrates Flag Day. A new flag is raised at the top of the Gediminas Castle Tower, and the flag which flew there throughout 2020 is given to the Juozas Lukša High School in Garliava. This year the Honour Guard raised the flag while following the safety rules dictated by the COVID-19 quarantine. The flag ceremony is a commemoration of the first raising of the yellow, green and red on January 1, 1919, as a symbol of Lithuania’s newly-won independence, then again 33 years ago, when independence was restored.
