Inflation Tops COVID-19 Worries

Nearly two-thirds of Lithuania’s population is seriously concerned about inflation and increasing energy, heating and fuel costs. A recent poll by “Inspired UM” shows that by comparison, only 37% of the population is very worried about the COVID-19 pandemic. Rising costs affect everyone, and there is no end in sight.

According to the poll results, at least 65% of the population are quite concerned about inflation, with 27% somewhat worried. Rising fuel and energy costs show 66% seriously concerned and 25% somewhat concerned, similarly, increasing heating costs are affecting 62% and 25% of the population.

The migrant crisis is making 43% of respondents quite fearful, 38% less so, but only 37% are afraid about COVID-19, while 35% are somewhat worried. People seem to be experiencing greater fear of the unknown than of the virus, and they are more willing to leave their homes during leisure time, but due to the economic situation, they are choosing simpler and less costly pastimes.

The poll indicates that 57% plan to spend less money in restaurants ad cafés, 53% will spend less on cultural events and will choose more economical winter holidays. This means that people are changing their plans and their habits accordingly, and will obviously alter market tendencies. Fears regarding COVID have actually increased, with 37% in October 2021, 34% in March 2021 and 21% in October 2020 being very concerned. In general, the population is becoming more sensitive to any changes from the norm.
