Toronto Artist Featured in LT magazine Kultūros barai

In its latest issue, the leading cultural journal in Lithuania “Kultūros barai” featured well-known Canadian-Lithuanian artist Snaigė Šileika. In an article called “Metaphorical Landscapes” author Regina Urbonienė, Head of the Fine Arts Department and curator of the Lithuanian print collection at Lithuanian Art Museum, notes that the artist, a relative and student of Lithuanian-Canadian graphic artist Telesforas Valius, had a personal show at Vilnius City Hall through July of this year.

A graduate of the University of Toronto and the École des Beaux Arts in Paris, Šileika worked primarily with Toronto’s Open Studio, where she first experimented with colour lithography, in particular with the cycle “Expressways” (1986). Since then, Snaigė has continued exploring the theme of voyages, with a growing number of sub-texts, writes Urbonienė. For over 25 years, Snaigė has been a member of the group the “Gibson Girls”, who travel together (by canoe) through the Ontario wilderness and create art installations together. A theme she often explores is humanity’s relationship with nature. Her work capturing plant life and its features reflects the relentless passage of time and entices the viewer to look more closely and find new meanings in various aspects of nature.
