On July 16, the eve of World Lithuanian Unity Day, Lithuanian president Gitanas Nausėda and Diana Nausėdienė met with members of the World Lithuanian Community. Various topics were discussed, including citizenship retention, Lithuanian language teaching, remigration to Lithuania and promoting civic awareness. Another important topic was the referendum regarding dual citizenship which would take place together with the next presidential elections in 2024. The president stressed that the retention of Lithuanian citizenship and dual citizenship remains a very important issue, and both Lithuania and the diaspora must make greater progress in increasing voter participation.
Regarding Lithuanian-language learning abroad, the president noted that although there are more than 200 Lithuanian language schools abroad, only 6% of Lithuanian children in the diaspora are consistently learning the language and history. He praised the efforts of school founders and teachers in passing on the value of the younger generation’s connection to Lithuania, saying that the schools not only help maintain their bond and help them integrate when they return to Lithuania, but also encourage them to participate in Lithuanian communities and their activities. Lithuania’s relationship with the diaspora, cultural projects and cultural retention were also mentioned.
