Mother’s Day Cherry Blossom Viewing in Toronto’s High Park

Celebrate Mother’s Day and spring’s arrival with a visit to High Park and participate in the centuries old Japanese tradition of Sakura Hanami, roughly translated as “cherry blossom flower viewing.”

The flowering of the Sakura trees is spectacular, but peak bloom only lasts about a week. The blooming period begins when 20% of the cherry blossoms are open and ends when their petals fall. “Peak bloom” starts when at least 70% of the blossoms are open.

High Park Nature Centre predicts peak bloom will begin May 7/8 – right in time for Mother’s Day!

Most of the Sakura cherry trees are located around Hillside Gardens and there are a few by the Duck Pond as well.

Sakura at Toronto Islands

It’s a little known fact that there are 30 Japanese Cherry trees at Toronto Islands. If you want to avoid the large crowd at High Park when the trees are blooming a great alternative is to go see the trees at the Islands. They are on Centre Island located at the south end of the bridge near the fountain. It’s about a 10 minute walk from the Centre Island ferry docks.
